Data Types

There are two main data types; labels and values.

  • Labels

A label is the name used to describe a cell which just contains text. This text can describe the contents of other cells. For example, the cell at the head of a table will normally be used to describe the general contents of the cells below.

The contents of a label can be wider than the cell width. If there is nothing in the adjacent cells the contents of the label cell will spill into the adjacent cell(s), depending on the justification of the cell; Left justification will spill into the cell to the right, Center will spill into both left and right cells. If there is something in the adjacent cells, the cell contents will appear truncated, but will still be present. The cell width can be adjusted to fit its contents by clicking the Fit button .

  • Values

Any other sort of cell is a value, which includes numbers, dates, formulae or results of formulae.

    • Numbers
Number cells are cells which contain numerical data.

If the cell contents is too large for its size in this case, the cell contents will appear as a string of asterisks (******).

    • Dates and Times
You can put a date into a cell in the standard date format and Quattro Pro will automatically know that the cell contents should be in date format, rather than a numerical expression. Quattro Pro recognises the following formats as dates:
      • 22/3/91,
      • 22/03/91,
      • 22-Mar-91.
The date can also be in written without the year, (eg 22/3 or 22-Mar ) in which case Quattro Pro will assume the date is in the current year. Once recognised as a date, Quattro Pro will re-write the date in which ever format you require by selecting [Block Format] from the [Quick Menu], or selecting the [Property], [Current Object] on the PowerBar.

You can also make Quattro Pro know that the number is a date by pressing [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[D] in the current cell.

    • Formulas
Formulas can be composed in the Formula Composer, where help on all the Quattro Pro functions is available. See the section on Formula Composer.

SpeedFill

SpeedFill will fill cells with a series of related labels or formulae. Type or enter the formula for one cell, select the block of cells that want similar information or formulae and click the SpeedFill button.

In this way you can fill a block with Jan, Feb, Mar, etc. or with formulae which refer to adjacent cell addresses, etc. You can also specify your own series by clicking on the [Create] button.

To speed fill the page tabs, click on the tab of the first page in the series, click the Speed Fill button and in the resulting dialogue box check the [Tabs] radio button.

Inserting Spreadsheet Elements

Insert rows, columns or pages under [Block][Insert], or by clicking the Insert button . Partial will just add the few selected cells of the row or column and shift the adjacent cells over.
